Identity Theft

WHAT IS IDENTITY THEFT?

Identity theft is broadly defined as the improper use of another's identity for a fraudulent purpose.  The variations of identity theft run the gamut.  Most commonly, people discover the unauthorized use of their exisitng legitimate credit card accounts.  Less often people discover thousands of dollars of charges from unknown credit card accounts opened in their name.  In some instances it can even involve encountering pending criminal charges or an exisitng warrant for their arrest based on acts of the thief.

HOW OUR OFFICE CAN HELP?

Despite identity theft's many variations, it almost always produces the same result; significant disruption and damage to the victim's life.  It is claimed that the average victim of identity theft spends many hours, sometimes hundreds, attempting to repair the damage and get their life back in order.  This is what the Law Offices of George E. Bourguignon, Jr. can help with.  Instead of going it alone and relying on sometimes well intentioned but faulty unprofessional advice, you can get a professional on board.  We help mitigate the disruption and damage and help restore your good name (and credit report(s)).  We encourage you to give us a call to see if we can help remedy the effects of this very damaging crime for you.

SPECIFICALLY  WHAT WE DO...

We help you remedy the effects of identity theft; whether it is getting false entries off your credit report(s), defending a collection lawsuit against you, or suing creditors and debt collectors for violating provisions of the law we can enforce for you.  (Yes, that's right, we can take the offensive if warranted!).  Overall, we can help remedy the effects of the identity theft based on your unique situation, which you will not get from self help sources.  We are usually called upon when the damage is great and the victim is facing obstacles that can seem overwhelming.

AND...WHAT WE DON'T

Generally, we do not provide services to stop or prevent identity theft before it occurs.  The federal and state governments have resources to help you safeguard your personal information, such as your social security number, to prevent identity theft.  You may contact the Federal Trade Commission or the Massachusetts or Connecticut Attorney General for such help.  Instead, we are the place to come to after the identity theft has been discovered to remedy its effects.
